Creating the account is free. The portal asks for your ID number because that is normal for a real job application, but it never asks you to pay anything.

WhatsApp: The Shoprite Group does run an official WhatsApp jobs line. The safe way to use it is to get the number from the official site itself, at apply.shoprite.jobs or the Shoprite Group careers page, and message it directly. At the time of writing, Shoprite's own help centre lists 087 240 5709 for store and jobs queries. Save that from the official source, not from a number a stranger posted in a group.

Scammers know thousands of people search for a Shoprite job every day. So they copy the logo, post "500 positions available, WhatsApp now," and give a number that is not Shoprite's.

Once you message the fake number, the script is always the same:

They "confirm" you got the job, which feels exciting and real
They ask for a fee, often R150 to R300, for a "background check," "uniform," or "training"
They tell you to pay it into an eWallet, or at a till, or via a voucher
Once you pay, they vanish, and there was never a job

Remember the one rule that beats every version of this scam: a real employer pays you. You never pay them. Shoprite and Checkers will never charge you to apply or to start.
