Privacy policy

CheckJobScam is a free South African service for checking whether a job offer is real. We publish the Android app CJS - Scam Check & Gov Jobs on Google Play, identified there by the package name za.co.zamoo.careers.

This policy covers that app and this website together. CheckJobScam is the responsible party for your information under the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA), and you can reach us at hello@checkjobscam.co.za.

No account, no sign up. When you check a job offer we keep the signals, not the message: the risk score, the red flags found, and any company name, phone number, email or link in it. We do not keep the text you pasted.

If you report a scam we keep what you tell us about it. If you email us we keep the email so we can reply.

The app signs you in with Google, so we receive your name, email address and profile photo. It then holds whatever you put into it: your CV details, the jobs you save, and anything you post to the community feed.

Your CV can include an ID number and driver's licence. Both are optional and the app works without them. Leave them out unless a particular application needs them.

Referees are somebody else's personal information. Only add someone who is happy to be listed.

Your CV and your saved jobs are private to your account. We do not sell them, publish them, or show them to employers.

The community feed is public. If you share a job there, your name and profile photo appear next to it, along with anything you wrote or attached. Do not attach a screenshot with your own details in it.

To tell you whether a job offer looks real, to spot patterns across the scams people report, to build your CV and remind you about closing dates, and to answer you when you get in touch. Nothing else.

Google, which hosts the app, signs you in and serves its ads. An AI provider, which reads a job offer when you ask us to check one. Analytics on the website, at the level of pages and countries rather than people.

We do not sell your information, and we do not give advertisers your CV, your saved jobs or anything you typed.

Scam signals and reports stay indefinitely, because the point of them is the pattern they build up. Emails go after twelve months. App data lasts as long as your account.

The Z83 is the government’s own application form and it asks every applicant for race, gender and whether they have a disability. Departments use those answers for Employment Equity reporting. If you fill in a Z83 here, we store them on your account so you do not type them again on the next one.

Race and health information are special personal information under section 26 of POPIA. We rely on section 27(1)(d), which permits processing them for affirmative action and employment equity purposes. That is the only reason we hold them.

They are optional. Leave them blank and everything else on the form still works. They are never used for advertising, never sold, never shared with anyone, and appear only in the documents you generate for yourself. Deleting your account under clause 9 deletes them with everything else, or email us to remove just these three.

Go to checkjobscam.co.za/delete-account and sign in. Your account, your CV, your Z83 answers, your saved jobs and your reminders are deleted at once, and your name and photo come off anything you shared. It cannot be undone.

In the app it is the You tab, then Delete account. You can do either after uninstalling the app, and you do not need the app to do it at all.

If you have lost access to the Google account and cannot sign in, email hello@checkjobscam.co.za and we will do it within 30 days.

You can ask what we hold, ask for a copy, correct it, or have it deleted. You can turn off ad personalisation under Settings, Google, Ads on your phone, and cookies in your browser.

If we get it wrong you can complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa.

This is not for under 18s and we do not knowingly collect their information.

If this changes we update this page and the date at the top. Carrying on using the site or the app means you accept it.
