Government jobs are the holy grail for many South African job seekers. Good salaries, job security, benefits, pension. It's no wonder they're so competitive.
Scammers know this too. That's why fake government job posts flood Facebook, WhatsApp, and dodgy websites every day. They promise SAPS positions, municipal jobs, "government learnerships," and public service roles. All fake.
This guide gives you the definitive list of official government recruitment channels. Bookmark this page. If a "government job" isn't posted on these platforms, it's not real.
The Golden Rule
All South African government jobs are advertised through official channels. There are no shortcuts, no WhatsApp recruiters, and no fees.
Read that again. Memorise it. Any exception to this rule is a scam.
The Z83 Application Form
First, you need to understand the Z83.
The Z83 is the standard application form for all national and provincial government positions. It's free to download and use. No one can charge you for "Z83 processing."
Download the official Z83: Available at dpsa.gov.za
If someone asks you to pay for a Z83 form or to have it "processed," they are scamming you.
Official Recruitment Channels by Department
National Government Jobs: DPSA
Website: www.dpsa.gov.za
The Department of Public Service and Administration (DPSA) is the master list for national government vacancies.
How it works:
- Vacancies are advertised in the Public Service Vacancy Circular
- New circular released every Friday
- Available as free PDF download
- Lists all national department positions
What you'll find:
- Department of Home Affairs
- Department of Health
- Department of Education
- Department of Social Development
- And all other national departments
How to apply:
- Download the vacancy circular
- Complete the Z83 form
- Submit to the address listed in the advertisement
- No fees ever
South African Police Service: SAPS
Website: www.saps.gov.za
SAPS recruitment is done centrally and announced on their official website.
Critical warning from SAPS: "SAPS does not recruit general workers, cleaners, or security officers through social media, WhatsApp, or third parties. All SAPS vacancies are advertised on the official website."
Typical positions:
- Police trainees (annual intake)
- Civilian positions (admin, forensics, IT)
- Reservists (specific recruitment drives)
The scam version: Posts claiming "SAPS hiring 10,000 constables. WhatsApp this number" are 100% fake. SAPS announces trainee intakes formally, with clear application periods and physical application points.
South African National Defence Force: SANDF
Website: www.dod.mil.za
Military recruitment follows strict processes with annual intake programs.
What to expect:
- Military Skills Development (MSD) program for young recruits
- Specific advertisement periods
- Physical application and assessment process
- No online-only recruitment
Common scam: "Join the army from your phone! WhatsApp now!" This is impossible. Military recruitment requires physical assessment.
Statistics South Africa
Website: www.statssa.gov.za
Stats SA hires for census periods and ongoing statistical work.
Warning on their site: "Stats SA warns the public against fraudulent recruitment schemes. We do not advertise on third-party websites using '.buzz' or '.online' domains."
Provincial Government Jobs
Each province has its own vacancy portal:
| Province | Portal |
|---|---|
| Gauteng | jobs.gauteng.gov.za |
| Western Cape | westerncape.gov.za/jobs |
| KwaZulu-Natal | kznonline.gov.za (vacancies section) |
| Eastern Cape | ecprov.gov.za |
| Free State | fs.gov.za |
| Limpopo | limpopo.gov.za |
| Mpumalanga | mpumalanga.gov.za |
| North West | nwpg.gov.za |
| Northern Cape | northern-cape.gov.za |
Key point: All legitimate provincial vacancies end in .gov.za. Not .com, not .org, not .buzz, not .online.
Municipal Jobs
Municipalities advertise on their own websites and often in local newspapers.
Major metros:
- City of Johannesburg: joburg.org.za
- City of Cape Town: capetown.gov.za
- eThekwini (Durban): durban.gov.za
- City of Tshwane: tshwane.gov.za
How to apply:
- Check the specific municipality's careers page
- Applications are usually submitted to physical addresses or online portals
- No agents, no WhatsApp, no fees
State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs)
These aren't technically "government" but are often grouped with public sector jobs:
| Entity | Careers Page |
|---|---|
| Eskom | eskom.co.za/careers |
| Transnet | transnet.net/careers |
| SAA (South African Airways) | flysaa.com (check careers section) |
| PRASA (Rail) | prasa.com |
| SABC | sabc.co.za |
Common scam: Fake "Eskom learnership" posts circulate constantly. Eskom has stated clearly that all legitimate opportunities appear only on their official website.
ESSA: The Government's Job Portal
Website: essa.labour.gov.za
Employment Services South Africa (ESSA) is the Department of Employment and Labour's official job matching system.
What it offers:
- Register as a job seeker (free)
- Browse verified vacancies
- Receive job alerts matching your profile
- Access to career services
This is a legitimate government service. Registration is free. No payment ever required.
How to Spot Fake Government Job Posts
Domain Check
Real: .gov.za
- dpsa.gov.za ✓
- saps.gov.za ✓
- joburg.org.za ✓ (metros sometimes use .org)
Fake: Everything else
- govtjobs.com ✗
- sa-saps-recruitment.online ✗
- transnet-careers.buzz ✗
Method Check
Real government recruitment:
- Posted on official websites
- Advertised in government gazettes
- May appear in major newspapers
- Clear reference numbers for each vacancy
- Physical addresses for applications
- No fees
Fake government recruitment:
- Posted on Facebook/WhatsApp
- No reference numbers
- Vague "email your CV" instructions
- Request for "application fees"
- Generic contact details
Content Check
Real vacancies include:
- Specific job title and reference number
- Department and location
- Detailed requirements (qualifications, experience)
- Specific closing date
- Full application instructions
- Contact details for enquiries
Fake vacancies include:
- Vague descriptions ("government workers needed")
- No reference numbers
- "Apply via WhatsApp"
- Urgency ("limited positions, apply now!")
- Too-good-to-be-true salaries
- Requests for payment
The Fee Check
Any fee = scam.
Government doesn't charge:
- Application fees
- Processing fees
- Background check fees
- Z83 processing fees
- "Connections" or "facilitation" fees
If anyone asks for money for a government job, they are committing fraud.
Case Study: The SAPS Facebook Scam
In late 2024, a post circulated on Facebook claiming:
"SAPS RECRUITMENT 2025! 10,000 positions available! No matric required! Salary: R15,000 starting! WhatsApp +27 XX XXX XXXX for application!"
This was investigated by Africa Check and found to be completely false.
Red flags:
- Posted on Facebook, not saps.gov.za
- WhatsApp contact (SAPS doesn't recruit via WhatsApp)
- "No matric required" (SAPS requires matric for most positions)
- No reference numbers
- No specific application process
The number collected personal information and money from victims before disappearing.
What to Do When You See a Government Job
Step 1: Note the department/entity mentioned
Step 2: Go directly to their official website (type it yourself; don't click links)
Step 3: Find their vacancies/careers section
Step 4: Search for the same position
Step 5: If it's not there, it's not real
This takes five minutes and could save you from losing money and personal information.
