Requirements

Grade 9 (NQF level 1) or equivalent qualification as recognised by SAQA. No experience required. All shortlisted candidates, including SMS, shall undertake two pre-entry assessments. One must be a practical exercise, and the other must be an Integrity (Ethical Conduct) Assessment. Knowledge of planting and firefighting. Communication skills, interpersonal skills and listening skills. Planning and execution, acceptance of responsibility, teamwork and self-discipline.

Duties

Render Silviculture functions within the plantations and forests. Conduct the marking of plots, counting and marking of trees. Maintain equipment used. Update a variety of registers regarding the aspects of work. Grade and record dried wood. Prepare site. Planting. Weeding / Manual / Chemical. Coppice reduction. Wattle Spacing. Rehabilitation of degraded sites. Maintain conservation zones. Removal of alien species. Preform forest protection tasks. Perform fire protection and suppression duties. Maintain firefighting equipment. Protect infrastructure. Perform forest protection task. Fight forest/veld fire. Perform fire protection suppression duties. Maintain firefighting equipment. Control pest/weed infection. Protect infrastructure. Render harvesting services. Clear felling. Debarking. Manual slipping of poles. Conduct log marking and pole measuring. Propagate plants and trees. Monitor the propagation of activities. Conduct record keeping of plant/trees. Produce and process poles. Cutting, drying, grading, treatment and sampling of poles. Provide support in selling of poles.
