Requirements

Minimum educational qualification: Four-year National Diploma / Degree or equivalent qualification in Health Sciences, registerable with a South African Statutory Health Professions Council or the South African Nursing Council. Experience: Appropriate experience in quality assurance, risk management and health service governance. Appropriate management experience within a hospital environment. Experience in patient safety, complaints management, adverse incident management, clinical audit, occupational health and safety, and service improvement. Experience in personnel management. Inherent requirements of the job: A valid Code EB/B driver's license. Competencies (knowledge/skills): Extensive knowledge of health service delivery systems, quality assurance, clinical governance, patient safety, risk management, and occupational health and safety. Knowledge of relevant legislation, policies, norms, standards, compliance tools and reporting requirements within the public health sector. Strong leadership, management, communication, interpersonal, analytical and problem-solving skills. Ability to lead multidisciplinary teams, influence service improvement, manage change and work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders. Computer literacy, including the ability to maintain, analyse and interpret databases and reports. Ability to prepare high-quality written reports, presentations, policies and action plans. Computer literacy, particularly in MS Office (MS Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).

Duties

Provide strategic and operational leadership for quality assurance, clinical governance, risk management, patient safety and occupational health and safety within Groote Schuur Hospital. Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate systems that strengthen the quality, safety, effectiveness and accountability of care across clinical, administrative and institutional management functions. Lead and coordinate quality improvement initiatives, including the complaints and compliments system, adverse incident reporting, morbidity and mortality review processes, clinical audits, patient satisfaction surveys and waiting time surveys. Analyse data and service trends to identify risks, gaps and areas for improvement, and ensure the development, implementation and monitoring of appropriate corrective action plans. Support outbreak investigations, infection prevention and control surveillance, occupational health programmes and compliance with relevant legislation, policies, standards, norms and service improvement plans. Develop, review and implement policies, protocols, standard operating procedures and reporting systems that promote safe, effective, equitable and patient-centred service delivery. Provide technical advice, training and support to departments and multidisciplinary teams, and promote a culture of quality, accountability, learning, responsiveness and continuous improvement across the hospital. May be required to perform duties outside of normal working hours.
