Red flags reported, and what each one means
Task/VIP-level scheme where you pay to "unlock" commissions
You are paid small amounts for simple tasks, then asked to deposit your own money to "unlock" a higher level or release your earnings. The early payments are real, which is what makes the later deposit feel safe. The money you deposit does not come back.
Paid tasks like liking videos or rating products
Liking videos, rating products or clicking links is not employment. These schemes exist to build trust before asking you to deposit money, or to farm engagement for something else.
Asked for an upfront "registration", "admin", or "background check" fee
No South African employer may charge you to apply, be interviewed, or be hired. Registration fees, admin fees and "background check" fees are the most common way money is taken in a job scam, and the amount is usually small enough to seem reasonable. If you are asked for one, the job is not real.
Sent you to a Google Site, bit.ly, or fake link instead of an official careers page
Real vacancies live on the company's own careers page. A Google Site, a bit.ly link or a lookalike domain means nobody at the real company is involved, and anything you enter goes straight to whoever built the page.
Promised an unrealistic salary for the work involved
A salary far above the market rate for the work is the bait. R40,000 a month for data entry with no experience is not a job offer; it is the reason you are expected to overlook everything else.
Impersonated a government department or state-owned company
Government departments and state-owned companies do not recruit through WhatsApp or social media. Every national and provincial post is advertised in the DPSA circular, and applying is free and requires a Z83 form.

How to stay safe
- A real employer pays you. You never pay to be hired.
- Verify the company on CIPC before sharing your ID or paying anything.
- Apply only through official careers pages, not WhatsApp numbers from a post.
- If you already paid, report it to your bank and SAPS immediately.
