Use a Skills-Based CV, Not a Work History
The standard CV format puts work experience first. If you have not worked, that format makes the emptiest part of your life the first thing anyone reads. A skills-based CV moves what you can do to the top and pushes work history to the bottom, or leaves it out entirely.
Order it like this:
- Name, cellphone number, area you live in
- Two-line summary
- Skills
- Languages
- Availability
- Education, or highest grade passed
- Work experience, if any
- References
The area you live in matters more than people expect. Site supervisors hire people who can reliably get to work, so "Katlehong, Ekurhuleni" near the top of your CV is doing real work for you.
A Summary You Can Adapt
The summary, objective or profile is the part most people get stuck on, so here are two to rewrite in your own words. Do not copy them word for word.
With no experience:
Hardworking general worker available immediately in the Ekurhuleni area. Comfortable with physical work, lifting and long shifts. Grade 11 completed. Speak isiZulu, Sesotho and English. Willing to work weekends and public holidays.
With some experience:
General worker with eight months on a construction site in Germiston, doing site clearing, loading and assisting artisans. Reliable with early starts and shift work. Grade 12 completed. Speak isiZulu and English.
Notice what both do: they say where you are, what you can do, and that you will actually turn up. That is the whole job of a general worker summary.

A driver's licence or forklift ticket is worth putting near the top rather than buried, because it separates you from most other applicants immediately.
Things You Have Done That Count
"No experience" almost never means nothing to show. All of these are legitimate CV material:
- Helping at a family spaza, tuck shop or stall
- Piece work, casual jobs, or helping on a site for a few days
- Gardening, painting or cleaning for neighbours
- Church or community projects
- Looking after younger children, which is reliability made visible
- School sports teams, which show you turn up on time
What to Leave Off
- Your full ID number. Give it in person when you are actually being hired.
- A photo. Not expected in South Africa, and it wastes space.
- Your full street address. Suburb and city is enough.
- Anything untrue. Site supervisors phone references, and the industry is smaller than you think.

Do You Need a Template?
People search for a general worker CV template, a sample CV, or a simple CV format, and they are usually after the same thing: reassurance about what it should look like. The honest answer is that a simple CV beats a designed one for this kind of work, every time.
Templates with columns, sidebars, icons and colour blocks look impressive and cause two problems. Screening software often cannot read them, and a site supervisor going through forty CVs by hand does not want to hunt for your phone number. Plain, single column, black text, clear headings. No, not on a CV you hand out or email. Employers only need your ID number once they are genuinely hiring you, and a CV with a full South African ID number on it is an identity theft risk once it circulates. Give it in person at the point of hiring.
Should I pay someone to type my CV?
You should not have to. Internet cafes charging R50 to R100 to type and print a CV is a normal service for printing, but paying hundreds of rand for a "professional CV that gets you hired" buys you nothing. And no employer, agency or recruiter should ever charge you a fee to apply for or receive a job.
