Requirements

Minimum educational qualification: Appropriate qualification that allows registration with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) as Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Registration with a professional council: Registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Experience: Grade 1: None after registration with the HPCSA as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Grade 2: A minimum of 5 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Grade 3: A minimum of 10 years’ appropriate experience as Medical Specialist after registration with the HPCSA (or a recognised foreign Health Professional Council in respect of a foreign qualified employee) as a Medical Specialist in Internal Medicine. Competencies (knowledge/skills): Ability to work and make clinical decisions independently. Ability to manage a broad spectrum of medical problems. Good organizational skills and ability to perform tasks efficiently. Ability to provide leadership and management within the Department of Medicine. Excellent individual coping and interpersonal skills and ability to perform well within a multidisciplinary team context. Enthusiasm to attend and present training and educational courses to broaden clinical and managerial skills and knowledge. Ability to communicate effectively.

Duties

To deliver comprehensive senior clinical services in General Internal Medicine to patients at Khayelitsha Hospital with the aim of supplying consistently safe, cost-effective, high-quality acute and chronic specialist care to the community. To provide management support to the Department of Medicine and Khayelitsha Hospital and to report effectively to the authorities for the sake of maintaining and improving services. To deliver teaching and training to undergraduate and postgraduate students as well as junior professionals. To initiate or participate in clinical research that benefits the service and organisation.
