What is the Z83 form?
The Z83 is the official Application for Employment form issued by the Department of Public Service and Administration. Every national and provincial government department uses it: SAPS, Home Affairs, Health, Education, SASSA, Correctional Services and the rest. It is also used for government internships and learnerships. If you are applying for a government post, you need one.
Is this the real Z83 or a copy?
It is the real one. We download the official gazetted PDF from the DPSA website and fill in its own form fields, then give you that document back. We do not generate a lookalike, because a form that is not the official one can get your application rejected.
Can I fill the Z83 form online?
Yes, on this page. You type your details into the form above and download the completed PDF, already filled in. Most sites only give you a blank form to print and write on by hand. You still have to print and sign the finished document, because departments require a handwritten signature.
Which is the new Z83 form?
The new Z83 has been the only accepted version since 1 January 2021, when the old form was withdrawn. It is the one that asks you to complete every field and states that a CV must accompany it. This page always fills in the current gazetted form from DPSA, so you cannot accidentally submit the old one. An application on the old Z83 can be disqualified.
What comes first, the CV or the Z83?
The Z83 goes on top. It is the official application form, so it is the first page of your submission, followed by your CV and then any documents the advert asks for. Departments read the Z83 first to check you have quoted the correct post title and reference number.
Is there a Z83 form in Word format?
DPSA publishes the form as a PDF, and a Word copy made by somebody else is not the gazetted document. That is the reason people look for one: the PDF is awkward to type into. Filling it in here solves the same problem without the risk, because you get the official PDF back with your details already in it.
Do I still need a CV with the Z83?
Yes. Most adverts ask for a completed Z83 together with a CV, and certified copies of your qualifications are usually requested only if you are shortlisted. Check the wording of the specific advert, because departments differ.
Why does the Z83 ask for my ID number when you say to keep it off a CV?
Because these are different documents going to different places. A CV circulates: it gets forwarded, posted in groups and emailed to strangers, so an ID number on it is an identity theft risk. The Z83 goes directly to a named government department as a formal application, and the ID number is a required field. Fill it in on the Z83, leave it off your CV.
Should I pay someone to complete my Z83?
No. The form is free from DPSA, free here, and free at any government department. Anyone charging you to fill in a Z83, or charging a fee to submit a government application on your behalf, is taking advantage of you. Government applications never cost money.
Do I need to sign it?
Yes. Print the completed form and sign it by hand where indicated. An unsigned Z83 can be treated as incomplete.
