Basic R425 qualification (i.e. Degree/Diploma) in nursing or equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a “Professional Nurse” with Midwifery A post-basic qualification in Advanced Midwifery and Obstetrical Nursing Science with a duration of at least one year, accredited with the SANC. Certificates of Registration with the SANC (General Nursing and Midwifery) Current registration with the SANC (2026) Experience Grade 1: a minimum of 4 years appropriate/ recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. Experience Grade 2: a minimum of 14 years appropriate/recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. At least 10 years of the period referred to above must be appropriate/recognisable experience in the specific specialty, i.e. Advanced Midwifery and Obstetrical Nursing, after obtaining the one-year post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty. Knowledge of nursing legislation, policies, guidelines and professional/ethical practices. Knowledge and skills in the management of normal and high-risk pregnancy, labour, delivery and the postnatal period. Ability to identify and manage obstetric emergencies within the scope of practice. Good communication, interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team. Basic computer literacy. Ability to plan, organise and provide quality nursing and midwifery care. Knowledge of Batho Pele principles and Infection Prevention and Control practices.
Duties
Provision of optimal, holistic and specialised nursing and midwifery care in the Admission, Antenatal and Labour Ward. Provide antenatal care and monitor patients during labour and delivery. Identify and manage obstetric emergencies and complications within the scope of practice. Effective utilisation of human, financial and material resources. Participate in training, research, quality assurance and clinical audits. Maintain accurate patient records and promote adherence to nursing and midwifery standards. Provide support to nursing services and work effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team. Maintain professional growth, ethical standards and self-development. Attend meetings, workshops and training programmes as assigned by the supervisor. Assist with relief duties of the supervisor and act as a shift leader on both day and night when necessary. NB: Must be prepared to work shift as per allocation; includes night shift, weekends and Public Holidays.

Directions To Candidates: Applicants must submit a fully completed, initialled and signed Z83 form and a detailed CV only. All fields of Sections A, B, C and D of the Z83 must be completed in full. Due to the limited space on the Z83, applicants may indicate “refer to CV” or “see attached” in Sections E, F and G. However, the question relating to conditions that prevent re-appointment under Part F must be answered, and the declaration must be completed and signed. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified supporting documents and a Certificate of Service endorsed by Human Resources. Only the new Z83 Application for Employment form, effective from 01 January 2021, will be accepted. The form is available from any Government Department or from the KZN Department of Health or DPSA websites. The reference number and position applied for must be clearly indicated on the Z83 form. The appointments are subject to positive outcomes obtained from the State Security Agency (SSA) to the following checks (security clearance (vetting), criminal clearance, credit records, citizenship), verification of Educational Qualifications by SAQA, verification of previous experience from Employers and verification from the Company Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC). All shortlisted candidates, including the SMS, shall undertake two pre-entry assessments. One will be a practical exercise to determine a candidate’s suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements and the other must be an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. The successful candidate will be required to sign a performance agreement within three months of appointment. Due to the anticipated high number of applications, applications will not be acknowledged. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates.
