Basic R425 qualification (i.e. Degree/Diploma) in nursing or equivalent qualification that allows registration with the South African Nursing Council (SANC) as a “Professional Nurse” with Midwifery A post basic qualification in ‘Critical Care Nursing Science’, with duration of at least 1 year, accredited with the SANC Certificates of Registration with the SANC (General Nursing and Midwifery) Current registration with the SANC (2026) Experience Grade 1: a minimum of 4 years appropriate/ recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. Experience Grade 2: a minimum of 14 years appropriate/ recognizable experience in nursing after registration as a Professional Nurse with the SANC in General Nursing. At least 10 years of the period referred to above must be appropriate/recognisable experience in the specific specialty (i.e. Critical Care Nursing Science) after obtaining the 1- year post-basic qualification in the relevant specialty. Knowledge, Skills Training and Competencies Required: Demonstrate an in-depth understanding of nursing legislation and related legal and ethical nursing practices. Demonstrate knowledge and skills in the provision of specialised critical care nursing. Possess good communication and interpersonal skills when dealing with patients, relatives, supervisors and members of the multidisciplinary team. Demonstrate knowledge of Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health and Safety practices. Demonstrate basic understanding of HR and financial policies and practices. Demonstrate basic computer literacy as a support tool to enhance service delivery. Ability to plan, organise and coordinate nursing care in the Intensive Care Unit. Ability to train, supervise and support junior staff and student nurses. Ability to identify and manage critically ill patients and respond appropriately to emergencies. Ability to promote quality patient care, ethics and professionalism.
Duties
Render optimal, holistic specialised nursing care to patients as a member of the multidisciplinary team. Train and supervise junior staff and student nurses. Maintain accreditation standards by ensuring compliance with National Norms and Standards. Co-ordinate clinical activities of the unit. Participate in the formulation, analysis, implementation and monitoring of unit objectives, policies and procedures. Ensure compliance with Infection Prevention and Control and Occupational Health and Safety policies. Strengthen ethics and professionalism. Provide a safe and therapeutic environment for patients, staff and the public. Advocate for quality patient care. Participate in staff development through the EPMDS system and other work-related programmes and training. Ensure that equipment and machinery are available and functional at all times. Report challenges and deficiencies within the unit. Attend meetings, workshops and training programmes as assigned by the supervisor. Assist with relief duties of the supervisor and act as a shift leader on both day and night when necessary. NB: Must be prepared to work shift as per allocation; includes night shift, weekends and Public Holidays.

Directions To Candidates: Applicants must submit a fully completed, initialled and signed Z83 form and a detailed CV only. All fields of Sections A, B, C and D of the Z83 must be completed in full. Due to the limited space on the Z83, applicants may indicate “refer to CV” or “see attached” in Sections E, F and G. However, the question relating to conditions that prevent re-appointment under Part F must be answered, and the declaration must be completed and signed. Only shortlisted candidates will be required to submit certified supporting documents and a Certificate of Service endorsed by Human Resources. Only the new Z83 Application for Employment form, effective from 01 January 2021, will be accepted. The form is available from any Government Department or from the KZN Department of Health or DPSA websites. The reference number and position applied for must be clearly indicated on the Z83 form. The appointments are subject to positive outcomes obtained from the State Security Agency (SSA) to the following checks (security clearance (vetting), criminal clearance, credit records, citizenship), verification of Educational Qualifications by SAQA, verification of previous experience from Employers and verification from the Company Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC). All shortlisted candidates, including the SMS, shall undertake two pre-entry assessments. One will be a practical exercise to determine a candidate’s suitability based on the post’s technical and generic requirements and the other must be an integrity (ethical conduct) assessment. The successful candidate will be required to sign a performance agreement within three months of appointment. Due to the anticipated high number of applications, applications will not be acknowledged. Correspondence will be limited to shortlisted candidates.
